Winter, of course, means skiing or boarding. The Portes du Soleil offers the World’s most extensive skiing domain, linking 14 resorts across 2 countries with 650km of piste. Passes are available for the whole area and ‘ski safari’ type tours can be arranged. Châtel situated at 1250 metres and has skiing up to 2400 metres, offering an equal balance of skiing for all levels. From some great black slope and off-piste skiing (regularly visited by the best free-stylers and free riders in the world), through to very appealing blues and reds and some excellent beginner facilities at multiple locations in the resort. For those looking to advance their skiing skills, there are 6 ski schools offering every level of tuition. Châtel also offers an excellent snow park with an 800 m ski and boarder cross run, 51 km of cross country pistes, night skiing in the Linga stadium and torchlight descents after an evening meal at one of the charming mountain restaurants.
The chalet is on the route of two ski buses linking to many lifts. See www.chatel.com for route plans. A car will take you quickly and conveniently to the further lifts, which generally have good parking. Chatel has an excellent record for snow, although early and late season are helped by over 50 snowmakers in the area. This large area offers plenty of choice for equipment hire or purchase.
The traditional Ski Ecole Francais is supplemented by the Ski Surf Ecole International, both with many English speaking instructors. Both offer group or private lessons for all ages and abilities. Babies and children are well catered for in Chatel, which offers skiing and non skiing crèche facilities. Need a break from skiing? – try skating on the ice rink or bowling or paragliding.
A variety of lift passes are available from kiosks at all the lift stations or can be booked in advance. No photographs are required.
See http://www.valdabondance.com and www.chatel.com for piste maps, prices and other information.
